Vertical and Horizontal Continuous Casting

At the Casthouse (R)Evolution Center, state-of-the-art continuous casting technology is available to you:

A Gautschi vertical continuous casting line with a 7.5-ton melting/casting furnace, as well as an HPI horizontal continuous casting line with a 1.5-ton electric melting/casting furnace.

Having both casting processes at one site makes it possible to compare different technologies directly and choose exactly the configuration that best matches your products and requirements.

Vertical Continuous Casting Line – VDC (Vertical Direct Chill)

Technical key data of the Gautschi VDC system

The vertical direct chill (VDC) casting line at our CRC is equipped with a 7.5-ton, gas-fired melting/casting furnace and enables the production of rolling ingots and round billets in a wide range of aluminum alloys, with lengths of up to around 7 m. An integrated in-line degasser as well as a ceramic filter ensure exceptionally high metal quality and very low inclusion levels. Proven Gautschi mold technologies are used, including AirGlide® round billet molds and modern rolling ingot molds. The products manufactured on this line stand out for excellent surface quality, homogeneous material properties, and high yield. This makes the system suitable for both standard alloys and demanding grades—up to high-strength alloys for challenging applications.

Gautschi Cast Technology

Technical key data of the HPI HDC system

The HPI system at the CRC features an electric melting/casting furnace with precise temperature control and is designed for horizontal continuous casting of round billets, slabs/plates, as well as foundry alloys in the form of ingots. Modern process technology ensures high metal purity, while proven mold technology guarantees stable and reproducible product quality.

As an ideal development platform, the HDC casting line enables alloys and process parameters to be produced and characterized under near-industrial conditions. A particular strength of this casting process is the production of round stock with small diameters that can be forged directly—without additional process steps such as extrusion.

Specifications:

  • Round stock: 50–300 mm
  • Busbars: up to 350 mm thickness
  • Cast plates: up to 1,580 mm width and 350 mm height
  • Ingots for foundry alloys
